UN Sustainability Goal 6: Clean Drinking Water and Sanitation

The United Nations Sustainability Goal 6 was established to ensure the availability and sustainable management of clean drinking water for all (United Nations). Unlike myself and many of you, about 785 million people do not have access to clean drinking water that is easily acquired from the nearest tap (WHO). In fact, about 2 billion people collect their water from sources with faecal contamination thus increasing their exposure to pathogenic bacteria which result in disease and illness. What has concerned me over the years is the disparity in access to clean drinking water between developed countries and those that are considered as underdeveloped or developing mainly located in Asia or Africa. Upon joining the Global Leaders and Scholars in STEM Donors Program at NYU,  I chose the following global challenge: Improving the accessibility to clean drinking water mainly for developing countries.

Over the years I have participated in research that investigated the resistance of wastewater bacteria which function as indicators for waterborne pathogens in the Silverman Laboratory which has been crucial to public health. To learn more about my research experience click the button below!
